Safer Streets,
Better Bungay

A community campaign for fairer, safer traffic in Bungay, Suffolk

Many Bungay residents are concerned about the way traffic operates in the town — from heavy lorries and speeding to parking pressures and wider road safety issues.

Some residents want stronger regulation, others want better enforcement, and many feel we now need both.

Local volunteers, community groups and councillors are already working hard on these problems. However, it is increasingly clear that Bungay needs greater political attention and influence if meaningful change is going to happen.

Decision-makers at every level need to understand both the scale of the problem and the effect it has on daily life in our town. We would all prefer action to happen before there is another serious accident.

Bungay Traffic Forum does not seek to tell residents what they should think or complain about. Our aim is simply to make sure the concerns of local people are properly heard and properly recorded.

About Us

Bungay Traffic Forum is an independent voluntary group of local residents working to raise the profile of traffic issues within the town.

We are not aligned to any political party.

The forum was launched in 2025 following a serious accident on Trinity Street, which prompted widespread concern about speeding and road safety, particularly in 20mph areas.

Since then, the forum has expanded its focus to include heavy lorries, parking pressures, pedestrian safety and broader traffic management issues across Bungay.

The group has already contributed to several positive developments, including improved pedestrian crossings and the introduction of new Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs).

However, we believe there is still much more to do.

Looking Ahead

In May 2027, residents are expected to vote for a directly elected Mayor as part of the proposed Norfolk and Suffolk devolution arrangements.

Experience elsewhere suggests that directly elected mayors can become influential voices on transport and infrastructure issues. Our ambition is to ensure that Bungay has a clear, evidence-based case ready to present to the new authority at an early stage.

That means building a strong body of evidence now — including residents’ submissions, photographs, traffic data and personal experiences.
